Wild Flag is a Portland, Oregon and Washington, DC-based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein (guitar/vocals), Mary Timony (guitar/vocals), Rebecca Cole (keys/vocals) and Janet Weiss (drums/vocals). The members of Wild Flag have played in numerous and notable bands including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, The Minders, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. The quartet has known one another for well over a decade as tour mates and band mates of varying proportions. If you draw a venn diagram illustrating the intersection of the various groups, Brownstein, Cole, Timony, and Weiss would all be in the same tiny spheres. Playing together felt almost inevitable.  Brownstein and Weiss were in Sleater-Kinney and toured with Timony's band Helium on numerous occasions. Brownstein and Timony collaborated in the late 1990's, on their project The Spells. They released one EP, The Age of Backwards, on K Records in 1999, and played a single live show in Olympia. Rebecca Cole's Portland-based band The Minders was a frequent opener for Sleater-Kinney. Weiss and Cole play together in the 1960's garage-rock cover band The Shadow Mortons.  After the fledgling quartet collaborated on an instrumental score for Lynn Hershman Leeson’s feminist artists documentary !Women Art Revolution!, the ease with which they worked together proved infectious. Further practices resulted in songs, and Wild Flag was formed.

You Say France & I Whistle, from Sweden, started in 2006. The vision from the beginning was openness in making music: blending different sounds and genres. The musical influences were many, everything from Beach Boys to Daft Punk. The band has three lead singers, which makes the music and the live shows more dynamic.

After returning from a cross-Canada tour with Jon-Rae Fletcher, both as his backing band and his opening band, Alphababy packed their bags and moved from Kelowna to Vancouver. Big changes lead to new beginnings, and with that, the band changed their name to Yukon Blonde, signed to Toronto-based Nevado Records (Bahamas, Fox Jaws), put their 300 show history behind them (including performances alongside Ladyhawk, Black Mountain and Women), and set out to write all new material, which they recorded in Vancouver with Shawn Cole (Bend Sinister, You Say Party! We Say Die!). Almost a year later, the result was a set of 14 songs.

They are masters of affirmative song writing and the deal on this claim is sealed, so to speak, by their magisterial use of vocals, whether employed in ridiculously gymnastic harmonies or counter melodic punches. Listen to the way the vocals inform the mood of a song; comforting as on “Shake Off the Leaves”, or slightly daft as in “Motorman and Owls”. “Lindyshop” has a wide-eyed lunacy that is all of its own making, all the time reined in and yet, (somehow, quite inexplicably for this correspondent), reinforced by some splendid harmonies. The music has a skip in its step, too: “The Moon Rides High” is a classic track, utilizing that clever knack of returning triumphantly to a catchy chorus. And I wonder what drives their lyrics? This is a record very much of its times and of another time; but unlike lots of releases around today, you don’t need – or feel the need – to have a degree in pop history to appreciate it.

By naming their first album “You Need Pony Pony Run Run” Gaëtan, Amaël and Antonin hit the nail on the head. Released in 2009, their first album, supported by the massive hit Hey You, was heralded a success by both critics and the general public: 110 000 copies sold, a “Victoire de la Musique” nomination award for “best new act voted for by the public” in 2010, an extensive tour around France and the 4 corners of the globe (Japan, Poland, Germany, Glastonbury Uk). All of this accomplished over a two year stretch. “One can never expect such success” comments Gaëtan “especially considering the fact that when we composed the album, there was no agenda behind our creativity other than that of wanting to make something that we all related to as a band”. This creative drive led the band to deliver during February a dazzling second album: simply named Pony Pony Run Run, a new album stuffed with pop gems, which will guarantee its position as one of the most wanted albums of 2012.

SingerSongwriter

 Kuenstlerinfo

Seattle musician Rocky Votolato is a soft-spoken, very kind, very hard-working father of two, born in rural Texas and raised in the Pacific Northwest indie scene (where he fronted the acclaimed rock band Waxwing). In his decade-plus life as a songwriter and musician he has sought to articulate something essential about life, writing songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn-out and lonesome ghost. His gravelly, sandpaper smooth voice and introspective lyrics mark him as that most rare of punk-rocker-turned-acoustic-troubadours: Votolato writes graceful, understated, human, unpretentious songs, demonstrating that simplicity is still a viable option for accomplished songwriters.

Soul

 Kuenstlerinfo

There aren’t too many artists making soul music today who had a release in 1969, back when R&B was first beginning to give the drummer some. Lee Fields, however, is one such artist—or maybe he’s better labeled a phenomenon. Since the late sixties, the North Carolina native has amassed a prolific catalog of albums and has toured and played with such legends as Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers, O.V Wright, Darrell Banks, and Little Royal. With a career spanning 43 years, releases on twelve different record labels, and having toured the world over with his raucous-yet-tender voice, it’s mind-blowing that the music he’s making today with Brooklyn’s own Truth & Soul Records is the best of his career.
